Unit Overview
In this unit, students will learn how to use social media safely. They will read about why apps like TikTok and Instagram have age limits and why some children still join before age 13. Students will also learn about dangerous TikTok trends, why some teens try them, and how likes, views, and social pressure can lead to unsafe choices. The unit teaches simple safety skills, such as keeping personal information private, talking to a trusted adult, and thinking before joining an online trend. Students will practice vocabulary from Band I, Band II, and Band III, read short texts, listen to a short audio task, and discuss real examples of online safety. Students will also complete a short writing task and a small project: each student will choose one TikTok challenge, learn about it, and present if it is safe or dangerous. By the end of this unit, students will understand how to stay safe, think carefully online, and make smart choices on social media.
Unit Objectives
By the end of this unit, students will be able to:
1. Explain why some social media apps have age limits and describe in simple sentences why some children join before age 13.
2. Identify risks of using social media too early, such as unsafe trends, pressure from likes and views, and contact with strangers.
3. Describe what dangerous TikTok trends are and explain why some challenges can cause injuries or harm.
4. Recognize the difference between safe and unsafe online behavior, including keeping personal information private and talking to a trusted adult.
5. Use basic vocabulary related to online safety and social media, including terms from Band I, Band II, and Band III.
6. Understand how social pressure affects online choices and explain why teens sometimes join trends even when they feel unsafe.
7. Participate in short discussions about online safety, giving simple opinions about trends, age limits, and smart online choices.
8. Complete short writing tasks (4–6 sentences) describing how to stay safe online or why some trends are dangerous.
9. Listen to a short A2-level audio text and answer simple questions about online safety.
10. Create a short presentation about one TikTok challenge, explaining whether it is safe or dangerous and how students can make better choices online.
