Unit Overview
Forget everything you know about the safety of home. Your ship is gone. The ocean is vast. You are standing on the burning sand of a deserted island with nothing but your wits and a single bag of supplies. This isn’t just a lesson—it is a mission to stay alive.
In this unit, we won’t just study English; we will use it as a tool for survival. You will experience the transition from a calm voyage to the sudden reality of a shipwreck. How do you decide what is “essential” when your life is on the line? How do you turn local materials into a fortress against a coming storm?
Your Journey Through the Wild:
Master the Survival Kit: Step into the logic of “Needs.” You will examine 10 life-saving items—from the Flashlight that cuts the dark to the Whistle that signals for help. Can you choose the right tool before the sun sets?
The Power of WE: You are not alone! You found other survivors, but a group is only as strong as its communication. You will enter the “Raft Rush” Trading Floor, using the target grammar of “We Have vs. We Need” to negotiate, trade, and build a raft before the thunder hits.
Architects of the Island: Put your creativity to the ultimate test. You will work in a team to build, draw, or digitally design a Survival Shelter. Whether you use “trash-to-treasure” recycled materials or Minecraft blocks, your house must be strong enough to survive the storm.
The SOS Signal: History is full of messages in bottles. You will record your own Emergency Message, using your voice to demand help from ships far out at sea.
Throughout this unit, you will develop the “Power of WE” and the razor-sharp logic of survival. You will learn to work together, trade fairly, and present your ideas with confidence.
Unit Objectives
By the end of this unit, students will be able to:
Survival Communication (Language Functions)
1. Master the Logic of Needs: Identify and categorize 10 essential survival items and explain their purpose using the structure “I need [item] because [problem].”
2. Harness the “Power of WE”: Transition from individual to group-based language, correctly using the pronoun “We” and the functional phrases “We have” and “We need” to manage team resources.
3. Negotiate on the Trading Floor: Use target grammar to interact with peers, asking “Do you have…?” and proposing trades to complete complex tasks (building a raft).
Technical Skills (Vocabulary & Grammar)
4. Acquire Survival Nouns: Correctly identify and use Band I and II nouns related to nature (logs, ocean, storm) and equipment (flashlight, matches, compass).
5. Describe Actions & Situations: Use core verbs (build, trade, survive, hunt) and adjectives (cold, dark, thirsty, hungry) to describe the reality of the island.
6. Master Subject-Verb Agreement: Consistently apply the correct verb forms for “I” and “We” without adding an unnecessary “s” (e.g., I need / We need).
Collaborative Engineering (Critical Thinking & Creativity) 7. Solve Environmental Problems: Analyze a “Danger Scenario” and physically move to the correct “Solution Item” during high-speed classroom activities.
8. Architectural Design: Collaborate in a team of 4 to design a shelter, making choices between recycled materials, digital builds (Minecraft/Canva), or detailed posters.
9. Role-Based Collaboration: Function effectively within a team by fulfilling a specific job (The Builder, The Designer, or The Speaker).
Public Speaking & SOS Signaling
10. Deliver a Rescue Pitch: Confidently present a final project to the class using sentence starters to describe location, materials, and team actions.
11. Record an Emergency Message: Produce a clear 30-second audio “Message in a Bottle” that successfully communicates identity, current supplies, and urgent needs to an outside audience.

שליטה בערכת ההישרדות: היכנסו ללוגיקה של “צרכים” (Needs). תבחנו 10 פריטים מצילי חיים – מהפנס שחוצה את החשיכה ועד למשרוקית שמאותתת לעזרה. האם תצליחו לבחור את הכלי הנכון לפני שקיעת החמה?
הכוח של “אנחנו” (Power of WE): אתם לא לבד! מצאתם שורדים נוספים, אך קבוצה חזקה רק כמו התקשורת שבה. אתם תיכנסו ל”זירת המסחר” של מרוץ הרפסודות, ותשתמשו בדקדוק של “יש לנו” לעומת “אנחנו צריכים” כדי לנהל משא ומתן, לסחור ולבנות רפסודה לפני שהרעם יכה.
הארכיטקטים של האי: העמידו את היצירתיות שלכם למבחן האולטימטיבי. תעבדו בצוות כדי לבנות, לצייר או לעצב דיגיטלית מחסה הישרדותי. בין אם תשתמשו בחומרים ממוחזרים (“מזבל לאוצר”) או בבלוקים של מיינקראפט, הבית שלכם חייב להיות חזק מספיק כדי לשרוד את הסופה.

6. שליטה בהתאמת נושא-פועל: יישום עקבי של צורות הפועל הנכונות עבור “I” ו-“We” מבלי להוסיף “s” מיותרת (למשל: I need / We need).

עמידה מול קהל ואיתות
SOS .10. הצגת “פיץ’ חילוץ”: הצגת פרויקט סיום מול הכיתה בביטחון תוך שימוש במשפטי פתיחה לתיאור המיקום, החומרים ופעולות הצוות.
11. הקלטת הודעת חירום: הפקת הודעת שמע ברורה של 30 שניות (“מסר בבקבוק”) המעבירה בהצלחה זהות, מלאי נוכחי וצרכים דחופים לקהל חיצוני.
