Unit Overview
This unit explores the enduring power of myths and legends from cultures around the world, focusing on how these ancient stories reflect human struggles with identity, power, justice, and change. Students will dive into the myths of Prometheus and Pandora from Greek mythology, the Norse tales of Thor and Loki, the legendary lives of King Arthur and Mulan, the haunting story of Medusa, and the rebellious legacy of Spartacus. Each figure—whether god, hero, monster, or rebel—reveals how storytelling has been used to explain the world, challenge injustice, and inspire generations.
The unit fosters critical thinking and reflection through vocabulary work, structured readings, video-based listening tasks, and creative group discussions. Students will ask meaningful questions about bravery, freedom, leadership, gender, and resistance, comparing ancient legends to modern-day leaders, societal values, and media portrayals. Through writing tasks, debates, and class projects, learners will connect these timeless stories to their own lives—understanding how myths and legends continue to shape the way we view ourselves, each other, and the world around us.
Unit Objectives
By the end of this unit, students will be able to:
1. Understand the historical and cultural contexts of myths and legends from Greek, Norse, Roman, Chinese, and British traditions.
2. Explain the significance of key figures such as Prometheus, Pandora, Medusa, Thor, Loki, King Arthur, Mulan, and Spartacus in their respective myths or historical legends.
3. Identify central values represented by these figures, including courage, resistance, justice, leadership, gender equality, and sacrifice.
4. Analyze how stories reflect beliefs about power, identity, family, and societal expectations.
5. Use vocabulary from Bands II and III related to mythology, rebellion, identity, and gender roles.
6. Practice grammar through texts and writing tasks focused on past simple, relative clauses, and modals of possibility and obligation.
7. Strengthen reading and listening comprehension through informative texts, recorded exercises, and adapted film or podcast excerpts.
